Siegel Named a Law360 Transportation MVP

December 14, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 14, 2016—Los Angeles, CA—O’Melveny partner Robert Siegel was named a Law360 Transportation MVP Lawyer for 2016.

“Siegel has more than earned his stripes as chairman of the firm’s aviation group by serving as outside labor counsel to a number of major US airlines, including American Airlines, the former US Airways, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Republic Airways, Delta Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and cargo airline Atlas Air,” the publication observed, noting that his expertise encompasses everything from the Railway Labor Act to National Mediation Board matters.

In March 2016, Siegel led the O’Melveny team that secured a victory for American Airlines in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in a challenge from a group of former TWA flight attendants who claimed they were wrongly placed at the bottom of the seniority list after American bought TWA’s assets in 2001. It was one of the first appellate decisions addressing the McCaskill-Bond amendment to the Federal Aviation Act, enacted in 2007 to ensure that the integration of airline seniority lists after a merger occurs in a “fair and equitable manner.” In October, the US Supreme Court denied the former flight attendants’ petition for certiorari, leaving in place the Second Circuit’s ruling.

Siegel was also part of the O’Melveny team representing Alaska Air Group Inc. in its proposed combination with Virgin America Inc. The deal, which was announced in April 2016, is worth approximately $4 billion in total, including Virgin America’s debt and aircraft lease obligations.

Based in Los Angeles, Siegel is a former Chair of O’Melveny’s Litigation Department and Vice-Chair of the Firm.
