Partner Heather Meeker wrote this piece in Medium about commercial opensource software (COSS) businesses and why they thrive during bear markets. To explore how COSS companies weather downturns, Meeker analyzes 50 COSS companies during the major down markets of the last 30 years. She found that “most of the biggest COSS companies were built on software developed during a downturn … Of the companies considered, over 60% of them were started during a recession.”
