LOS ANGELES, CA – July 30, 2012 – O’Melveny & Myers LLP has been named to Law360’s “Global 20,” a list of the 20 international law firms “with the greatest global reach and expertise.” The publication noted that the selected firms offer not only a presence on the ground in locations around the world but also “broad expertise in global corporate, technology, currency and political trends.”
In its July 27, 2012, edition, Law360 profiled O’Melveny and its global growth, including the Firm’s steady expansion in Asia since becoming the first US-based firm to open an office in Tokyo in 1987. Most recently, O'Melveny entered into a formal association with leading Indonesian firm Tumbuan & Partners in Jakarta, marking its 15th office and the eighth located outside of the US. The Firm also plans to open an office in Seoul later this year as a natural outgrowth of its many years of work for major South Korean clients such as Samsung, the publication reported.
In an interview with Law360, O'Melveny Chairman Bradley J. Butwin discussed the Firm’s targeted growth strategy, which involves only establishing locations in regions where it has a strong profile. "It sounds intuitive, to play to your strengths," Butwin said. "But if you look at law firms over the last 20 years, you would find that many of them have built things that they didn’t have. 'Build it and they will come' is a different strategy than taking stock of where you're good," he added. "And we have done the latter."
Law360 cited O’Melveny’s “deep bench” of senior international lawyers who speak the native language and possess an in-depth understanding of local law and business practices as a key strength.
Larry Sussman, managing partner of O'Melveny's Beijing office, told the publication he attributes the Firm’s success in China to its ability to represent Chinese companies listed on US stock exchanges throughout their life cycles – from the financing before an initial public offering to the actual IPO and subsequent mergers and acquisitions – as well as a deep understanding of how regulatory issues and other government involvement can affect a deal. "You have to have an institutional knowledge of how long it takes to finalize a deal," he said. "If you've actually done it several times, and worked across the table with government parties that might be involved, you know how it works." He added that without that understanding, "so much gets lost in translation.”
Law360 also highlighted O’Melveny’s litigation offerings in Asia, which include the defense of Chinese clients against claims by US shareholders, and notes that the Firm has gotten out in front of legal developments such as the wave of litigation targeting US-listed Chinese companies over their financial reporting and auditing practices, and the growing number of Chinese clients who want to delist in the US and relist in Hong Kong, meeting the increased demand in both areas with multidisciplinary teams of lawyers in the US and Asia.
Among other recent successes, O’Melveny was recognized for its representation of China Polymetallic Mining Ltd. on its pre-IPO fundraising and a US$187 million IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and its role as advisor to China-based language training and test preparation services company Global Education & Technology Group Ltd. in its US$294 million sale to Pearson PLC, which despite a complex closing structure was completed within just over a month of the agreement's signing. The Firm was also cited for recently leading a number of innovative debt transactions, including advising China Eastern Airlines Corp. Ltd. on its offering of RMB2.5 billion (US$390 million) in "dim sum" bonds, and for funds work that included advising midmarket Turkish private equity fund Pera Capital Partners Fund I in its first closing with over €40 million (US$52 million) in commitments.
