TechCrunch: What China’s new data privacy law means for US tech firms

O’Melveny special counsel Scott Pink contributed an article to TechCrunch breaking down China’s new data privacy law, the Personal Information Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China or PIPL, which he notes “imposes protections and restrictions on data collection and transfer that companies both inside and outside of China will need to address.”

In “What China’s new data privacy law means for US tech firms,” Pink examines PIPL’s provisions, including its extra-territorial application, consent, notice, and personal information requirements, as well as other data handling requirements. He also lays out steps companies can take to ensure compliance before the law goes into effect in November 2021.
