US and China Department Heads Discuss Cybersecurity and Law Enforcement Cooperation

October 13, 2017

O’Melveny partner Ron Cheng’s latest article for Forbes.com discusses the first bilateral Law Enforcement and Cybersecurity Dialogue between the US and China.

“According to the US summary of outcomes...the one-day meeting covered four areas: repatriation, counter-narcotics, cybercrime and cybersecurity, and fugitives,” Cheng explains in his October 13, 2017, column.

“The bilateral criminal issue, of course, extends beyond these four topics and includes counterterrorism, money laundering, immigration fraud, and, from the US perspective, overseas bribery under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and similar laws. If and when the [US-China Joint Liaison Group on Law Enforcement Cooperation] next meets, it can be expected that these and other topics of law enforcement cooperation will be discussed,” Cheng concludes.

Cheng handles both anti-corruption and data security and privacy matters and is co-located in Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
