Kline to Speak at "Practicing Law in the Bay Area," a NDCA Judicial ConferenceApril 11, 2010
O'Melveny partner Matthew Kline (CC) will be speaking at "Practicing Law in the Bay Area," a Northern District of California judicial conference. Matt will participate in the panel "Can There Be Justice in the U.S. for International Wrongs? The Alien Tort Claims Act - Here, Now, and In the Future," speaking with fellow panelists Hon. Susan Illston (District Court Judge, NDCA), Prof. William Dodge (UC Hastings College of the Law), and Steve Berman (Hagens, Berman, Sobol, Shapiro LLP).
The panelists will discuss the Alien Tort Claims Act, was introduced as part of the Judiciary Act of 1789, which recently has moved from the academy to the courtroom in the NDCA and the Ninth Circuit. The panel will examines these cases, the experience of the courts and attorneys involved, the mechanics and implications of seeking domestic recourse for conduct abroad, and predictions for the future.
