O'Melveny to Host Seminar on International Trade Policy in the Obama Administration

May 13, 2009

O'Melveny will host a breakfast seminar on "International Trade Policy in the Obama Administration" on May 13 at the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel in Menlo Park, California. Partner Ted Kassinger, co-chair of the Firm's International Trade practice and former United States Deputy Secretary of Commerce, and Bill Reinsch, President of the National Foreign Trade Council and former US Under Secretary for Export Administration, will discuss the key international trade issues facing the Obama Administration, and what to expect as the new team moves forward.

Specific issues to be discussed include:

  • Will NAFTA be renegotiated?
  • Will the Administration seek approval of the Colombia, Panama, and South Korea FTAs? Will it negotiate new FTAs? What new protections for labor and the environment will it seek?
  • Will the Doha Round of World Trade Organization negotiations be revived? What will be the approach?
  • What approach will the Administration take to China trade?
  • Will the Cuba embargo be lifted? How will the Administration use economic sanctions generally?
  • How will the Administration manage trade issues in the cap-and-trade legislation?
