Associated Press: 2 NC Democratic Attorneys Meet at Appeals Court Over AG’s Ad

The 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments from representatives for two elected North Carolina Democratic government lawyers over claims relating to ads from Attorney General Josh Stein’s re-election campaign in 2020. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman filed a lawsuit against Stein alleging that he violated a state law that criminalizes certain political speech in one of his campaign ads when running against Republican challenger Jim O’Neill. Stein’s campaign was granted a temporary injunction earlier this year by the appeals court, which will determine whether the injunction should be extended. “This statute is one-sided in the kinds of speech that it affects in the electorate,” said attorney Michael Dreeben, who represents Stein. “It says nothing about the candidate that chooses falsely to inflate the candidate’s credentials, to pollute the electoral process with false claims against himself.”
