The Recorder: O’Melveny Partner Healthier on the Job, More Creative, From Working at His Flower Farm

O’Melveny partner David Deaton has found a welcome counterbalance to his role as an in-demand advisor, chair of the firm’s Health Care Practice, and lead director of the firm’s Policy Committee in EarthSpoke Farms, a 10-acre flower farm in Northern California that he started with his family in 2021. “This has been such a tremendous blessing to me and my family,” Deaton said. Now in its third season, the farm is a labor of love for the Deaton family and has given David more energy for legal work and improved his creativity. “David has found a wonderful way to connect with the outdoors and bring joy to others while embracing part of our firm’s heritage,” said O’Melveny chief operating officer George Demos, who noted that founding partner Henry O’Melveny had a similar passion for nature. Deaton encourages his O’Melveny colleagues to visit the farm—including Michael Pierce, counsel in the San Francisco office who said that the time he spent there helped to reinforce the notion that success as a Big Law lawyer “can go hand-in-hand with other meaningful pursuits.”
