ABA Journal: BigLaw Taps Into Underserved High Schools for Next Generation of Diverse Lawyers

Legal industry strategist Peter Zeughauser and Thrive Scholars founder James T. London joined about 100 law firm chairs on a Zoom call in the summer of 2020 to discuss ways to address calls for racial justice in the wake of George Floyd’s death. London’s program, Thrives Scholar, helped high schoolers of color in low-income communities get jobs in science, tech, and finance. Following their discussion, the parties created Thrive’s Law Pathway. O’Melveny associate Maybelline Mena-Hadyka went through the program before 2020 and connected with practicing lawyers with the help of London. “Otherwise, I would have never met a lawyer until I was working. So, that was really valuable to me,” Mena-Hadyka said. The program now has 129 scholars.
