Associated Press: Poorer Districts Win Challenge to Pa. Public School Funding

Commonwealth Court Judge Renee Cohn Jubelirer ruled yesterday that Pennsylvania’s public school funding model violates the constitutional rights of students in the state. Judge Jubelirer held that Pennsylvania has failed to fulfill its constitutional obligation to provide adequate educational resources to poorer school districts across the state, noting that students should be receiving a “comprehensive, effective, and contemporary” education. Six school districts, four parents, and two statewide organizations originally sued the state in 2014 claiming that Pennsylvania’s funding formula discriminates against students in low-income districts. The petitioners are represented by O’Melveny & Myers LLP, the Public Interest Law Center, and the Education Law Center.
