Associated Press: Supreme Court Notebook: Gender Gap Persists at Arguments

The US Supreme Court concluded its most recent term yesterday with a total of 59 arguments from October to April. Two of the three lawyers delivering arguments yesterday were women, but over the course of the term, men presented 118 arguments and women presented 35. Martha (Mattie) Hutton delivered her first Supreme Court argument earlier this month in an immigration case which she first argued in a lower court. Even though Hutton’s colleague Michael Dreeben has argued more than 100 cases before the Supreme Court, she gave credit to her firm, O’Melveny & Myers LLP, for sticking with her. Hutton noted that a more experienced lawyer easily could have taken the case, but “they used that experience to support one of the more junior partners to become an advocate at that level.”
