Bloomberg Law: Walter Dellinger, Supreme Court Advocate and Duke Professor, Dies

February 16, 2022

Former US Solicitor General and Supreme Court advocate Walter Dellinger has died at the age of 80. Dellinger argued a total of nine Supreme Court cases as Solicitor General and at least 11 more in private practice as a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP. “There is a remarkably long list of lawyers in academia, in government, in business, at law firms, at nonprofits, and on the bench who Walter helped to find their place,” O’Melveny chair Bradley Butwin said. Dellinger, who headed the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel before serving as Solicitor General, recently wrote a guest essay for The New York Times defending President Joe Biden’s commitment to nominate a Black woman to the US Supreme Court. “Our history shows that the process of reaching out to expand the personal backgrounds of the justices has often produced stellar jurists who made historic contributions to the court and our judicial system,” Dellinger wrote.
