Global Competition Review: Amazon/MGM Wins Top Prize at GCR Awards

O’Melveny received two top recognitions at the Global Competition Review’s 2023 GCR awards ceremony. In the “Behavioral Matter of the Year” category, O’Melveny was recognized for successfully defending former Pilgrim’s Pride CEO Jayson Penn in three criminal antitrust trials following accusations of a scheme to rig bids for broiler chicken products from 2012-2019. O’Melveny’s defense of Penn in the first two trials resulted in hung juries, and after an unprecedented third trial, O’Melveny secured an acquittal for Penn in July 2022. In the “Merger Control of the Year – Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa Region” category, Global Competition Review recognized O’Melveny for advising Asiana Airlines on its US$1.4 billion proposed acquisition by Korean Air. With the implementation of various remedies to resolve competition concerns, the deal has been cleared by authorities in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan, as well as Australia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom; review is ongoing in Japan, the United States, and the European Union.
