On Wednesday, June 30, President Joe Biden’s Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States met for its first day of testimony, The National Law Journal reported. Largely comprised of academics, the commissioners questioned witnesses sitting on four different panels about the potential reforms.
Some of the prominent issues included the imposition of term limits, expanding the number of justices, and transparency. Experts also discussed whether the Court is an “anti-democratic institution” protecting “unpopular individual rights.”
O’Melveny partner and former deputy solicitor general Michael Dreeben weighed in: “The question I would ask is where protection for those citizens and individuals will come from, if not from an independent Supreme Court.”
