Law360: Gun Control Groups Ask High Court To Review Bump Stocks

May 9, 2023

The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, and Everytown for Gun Safety filed an amicus brief arguing that the US Supreme Court should review a Fifth Circuit decision that nullified a US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives rule banning bump stocks. “Public gatherings — to worship, to protest, to celebrate, to play — are essential to Americans’ way of life and to the health of our religious, political and social institutions,” the gun control groups said. “Because bump stocks dramatically increase a weapon’s fire rate but compromise its accuracy, they are ill-suited for sport shooting or self-defense —they are only suited for spraying many bullets in a short time.” The groups are represented by Stephen J. McIntyre, Ian Simmons, Sergei Zaslavsky, David K. Roberts, Tyler Helms, Emily Murphy, and Arjun Shenoy of O’Melveny & Myers LLP.
