The effects of the pandemic have caused a major uptick in the amount of pro bono legal work and law firms have mobilized to meet the demands. The economic downturn saw millions of people lose jobs, small businesses struggle, and an increase in domestic abuse while issues including racial justice and voting rights took center stage. “The needs right now are so overwhelming,” pro bono counsel at O’Melveny & Myers LLP Jerri Shick said. “The pandemic has really laid bare, and in a lot of ways exacerbated, so many societal inequities.” O’Melveny and other law firms have devoted ample time to help those struggling as a result of COVID-19 and are directing their pro bono efforts to areas such as unemployment insurance, public benefits, small business assistance, housing, and domestic violence.
