Legaltech News: As Digital-Based Legal Research Increases, Opinions Are Split if E-Books Will Be Left Behind

The future of e-books is unclear to law librarians as digital-based resources increasingly become the norm in legal research. According to an American Bar Association survey of 430 lawyers, 35% of respondents have never used e-books for research and only 8% use e-books regularly. O’Melveny director of information services June Hsiao Liebert noted that e-book usage rates may drop even further due to new digital resources and younger lawyers entering the market. “I think it’s a matter of time until we get to a point online resources are so easy to use, access and see … and users get used to it. You think about the younger generation coming in, they are not as wedded to the book, they don’t need that format to understand it. I think it’s a matter of time,” Liebert said.
