The American Lawyer, The Deal, Law360, Bloomberg Big Law Business, SportsBusiness Journal, and Mergers & Acquisitions, among other publications, reported that O’Melveny represented prominent hedge fund manager and private investor David A. Tepper in his winning, record-setting bid to purchase the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. Tepper is the co-founder of Appaloosa Management.

The American Lawyer noted that some of the “best-known legal dealmakers in the sports world” handled the transaction, including O’Melveny sports industry co-chairs Charles Baker and Irwin Raij, who are representing Tepper in the transaction. As the publication reported, “Baker joined O’Melveny & Myers in January 2017 from DLA Piper, while Raij came aboard a few months later from Foley & Lardner. The American Lawyer recently reported on Raij’s role as an owner himself of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club. On a teaching visit last month at the University of Miami School of Law, Raij and Baker led students through an M&A seminar related to sports teams.”

The Deal observed that Baker was “involved in the Brooklyn Nets recent sale of a controlling interest in the team. He also advised the Atlanta Hawks on their 2014 sale to private equity executive Tony Ressler while at DLA Piper.”

Based in New York, Baker’s corporate practice encompasses mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and venture capital transactions, with a core focus in the sports, media and consumer sectors. He has represented buyers and sellers of sports franchises in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and many of the European football leagues.

Raij, who is also based in New York, has extensive experience advising clients on a wide range of sports business issues, on both the professional and the collegiate levels. He has represented owners and acquirers of professional sports teams, leagues, universities, and state governments, including in matters related to stadium development and media rights.
