SC Magazine: Colonial Pipeline attack: What government can do to deter critical infrastructure cybercriminals

O’Melveny counsel and former attorney with DHS, DOD, and the NSC John Dermody provided commentary to SC Magazine about potential US government policy changes with respect to the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure, a perennially private-sector issue with national security ramifications. 

The Biden administration has many options on the table to deter future incidents like the Colonial Pipeline attack, including sanctions, extraditions, and international diplomacy, as well as in-kind offensive operations, according to Dermody. “I think where you’ll see new activity over the next few years is the use of [Cyber Command] to throw sand in the gears of cybercriminals,” he said.
