The Wall Street Journal: Biden Introduces Attorney General Pick Garland, Other DOJ Selections

January 7, 2021

President-elect Joe Biden introduced his leadership team for the Justice Department, including O’Melveny Data Security & Privacy Group co-chair Lisa Monaco as his choice to be US Deputy Attorney General, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“We need to restore the honor, the integrity, the independence of the Department of Justice in this nation that has been so badly damaged,” Biden stated at the press event announcing his nominees.

Before joining O’Melveny Monaco held several high-level law enforcement and national security positions, including as counterterrorism and homeland security adviser to President Obama, the publication noted. During her tenure, she helped develop and execute the federal response to issues such as cybersecurity, border security, global health threats, and domestic terrorism. Monaco was a senior Justice Department official before joining the White House.

Now returning to the Justice Department in it’s second-highest role, Monaco will contend with the damage from a recent hack suspected to be of Russian origin that breached more than half a dozen government agencies, WSJ reported, adding that Monaco cited growing cyber threats as among the department’s key challenges in her remarks.
