USA Today: Boy Scouts of America plan to exit bankruptcy would pay abuse survivors an average of $6,000 each

The Boy Scouts of America announced its bankruptcy exit plan, which includes $220 million in compensation for victims of scout leaders’ systemic sexual abuse with an additional $300 million in compensation from local chapters under consideration, USA Today reported. The organization’s insurers have argued that among the thousands of claims filed, some were insufficiently vetted, and the plan fails to include a process to identify those bad claims.
“Century supports a fair resolution for survivors of sexual abuse, but this plan doesn’t get us there,” said O’Melveny partner Tancred Schiavoni, legal advisor to one of the insurers. “Allowing invalid and fraudulent claims will hurt valid survivors of sexual abuse by delaying and diluting any compensation they may receive.”
