USA TODAY: Separated at the border, reunited three years later: Dad and daughter come together at airport

September 18, 2021

USA TODAY reported how President Biden’s Interagency Task Force on the Reunification of Families led to a very special moment at Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport. At 16, Anyeli was separated from her father by U.S. Border Patrol agents under former President Trump’s zero tolerance border policy and forced to navigate a new country and language, parentless and alone.

On the evening of Sept. 16, 2021, after three years of enforced separation, Anyeli was reunited with her father Carlos.

O’Melveny associate Racquel B. Martin, who assisted with the legal fight to get Carlos back to the United States, was quoted in the article and highlighted the need for ongoing mental and social support for families being reunited. “They’ve been through a traumatic experience that shaped the course of their lives forever,” she said. “They can’t get those years back.”
