WGBH (Boston PBS affiliate): Mass. High Court Could Pave the Way for Medically Assisted Death

Arguments were heard by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in a case that could decide the legality of physician-assisted suicide in the state. The case was brought by 70-year-old Dr. Roger Kligler, a retired physician with advanced prostate cancer who used to treat terminally ill patients but could not legally prescribe lethal drugs. “I just realized that people need to have a choice at the end of life so that they are able to have less in the way of pain, if they want that choice,” Kligler said. John Kappos, Kligler’s attorney, said that the chain of self-causation regarding a patient’s request for such drugs is not broken by a doctor’s intervention.
