WHP-TV (CBS Harrisburg, PA): Court Rules School Funding Isn’t Fair in Pennsylvania. What Happens Now?

Plaintiffs in a landmark case over education funding scored a victory Tuesday after Commonwealth Court President Judge Renée Cohn Jubelirer declared that Pennsylvania’s public school funding system was unconstitutional. The plaintiffs, which include six school districts, four parents, and two statewide organizations, originally sued the state in 2014 over claims that students in lower-income districts were deprived of necessary educational resources. “Lawmakers are in the process of going through their funding determinations and, with a decision like this in front of them, certainly they are going to take into consideration the fact that they need to meet that standard and they are under court order to do so,” said O’Melveny & Myers LLP attorney Katrina Robson, who represents the plaintiffs.
