WTOP NEWS: Nation-state hackers undeterred by US ‘naming and shaming’

O’Melveny counsel and former US government national security lawyer John Dermody was quoted by WTOP NEWS in an article discussing the most effective strategies in tackling ransomware attacks and cybersecurity. 

“Publicly calling out countries like Russia for supporting ransomware attacks is an important step, but naming and shaming only goes so far,” said Dermody, emphasizing that while coordinating with our international colleagues to humiliate hackers “is an important first step,” ending such attacks would require substantially more effort.

Dermody pinpointed that identifying the country involved achieved significant impact. When The White House statement directly named China as using contract hackers, Dermody said it highlighted the importance of who is behind such attacks.
