January 17, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK—January 17, 2020—Jeffrey Kohn, managing partner of O’Melveny’s New York office, has received the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Foundation’s Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award, the organization’s highest honor.

Founded more than 60 years ago by the actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY is dedicated to inspiring and developing its global community of youth and volunteers to a “life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation” through leadership workshops and seminars, among other programs. The organization counts more than 470,000 students as alumni.

“I am truly honored to receive this leadership award named for Dr. Albert Schweitzer,” Kohn said in accepting the award. “I’ve been so fortunate to work at a law firm that values exceptional client service and also encourages us to donate time to our communities. That is what led me to my work in education and that is what has led me to my work in HOBY.”

Named for the Nobel Prize-winning humanitarian, the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award is presented to individuals who have “distinguished themselves through service to mankind and who have contributed significantly through leading, educating and motivating youth.” Past honorees include Muhamad Ali, President Gerald and Betty Ford, Doug Parker (CEO of American Airlines), and Dolores and Bob Hope.

Kohn was presented with the award at the HOBY Foundation’s Albert Schweitzer Awards, held in New York. More than 200 HOBY students, alumni, colleagues, and friends attended the event, which featured a video tribute to Kohn filmed by his son Brian Kohn and featuring many of his O’Melveny colleagues.

In presenting the award, HOBY CEO and president Javier La Fianza hailed Kohn’s commitment to education and youth leadership, describing him as a “man of deep integrity” who “helps us to grow and be a better organization.”

In addition to serving on the Board of HOBY, Kohn serves on the Board of Trustees of Bryn Mawr College, as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School, and a member of Advisory Boards at GW Law and Cornell University.

Kohn also leads O’Melveny’s New York college scholarship program, which annually awards scholarships to students from five local high schools. To date, more than 240 public high school students in New York have been recipients of O’Melveny college scholarships. Through Kohn’s efforts some of those students have also attended HOBY programs.

In addition, O’Melveny advised HOBY on its merger with the educational nonprofit EduMaKate, which was co-founded by a former O’Melveny scholar and lawyer.

At O’Melveny, Kohn serves as a strategic legal advisor on labor-management relations, including collective bargaining, labor arbitrations, and NLRB and NMB matters for a variety of clients.
