Los Angeles Business Journal Names Pocha and Sugino “Minority Leaders of Influence”

LOS ANGELES—January 26, 2021—O’Melveny partners Madhu Pocha and Scott Sugino have been named to the Los Angeles Business Journal’s list of “Minority Leaders of Influence: Attorneys.” The publication features 95 minority lawyers in the LA region, whom the LABJ cites for making an impact on the legal world, “while serving as trusted advisors, along with maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards.”

In its profile of Pocha, the LABJ described the Century City-based litigator as a “steadfast leader of O’Melveny’s diversity and inclusion efforts,” noting that as co-chair of the Century City office’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, he has helped “advance issues of racial and social justice affecting the office, firm, and broader community.” The publication also lauded his work advising corporate, government and pro bono clients on matters spanning a wide range of legal areas, from antitrust and bankruptcy to environmental and entertainment law. As the LABJ noted, these include his representation of the Government of Puerto Rico in litigation related to its historic bankruptcy proceedings.

The LABJ hailed Sugino as a “true O’Melveny trailblazer,” who helped develop a corporate practice in the firm’s Tokyo office, which when it opened in 1987 was O’Melveny’s first office in Asia. “Using his Japanese language skills, knowledge of intricate corporate transactions and affinity for both leadership and creativity,” the publication observed, “Sugino was able to serve as a bridge across the Pacific for clients,” particularly in the tech and media sectors. Now based in LA, Sugino continues to work with Japanese clients, including Mitsui whom he has represented in more than two dozen deals over the past two years.
