Meeker and Simmons Named Daily Journal 2019 “Top Women Lawyers”

SAN FRANCISCO AND SILICON VALLEY—May 8, 2019—The Daily Journal has named O’Melveny Intellectual Property partners Heather Meeker and Luann Simmons to its list of the “Top Women Lawyers” of 2019. The special section honors “the victories of women lawyers in the courtroom and the advancements of women in law.”

The Daily Journal cited Meeker’s pioneering work in open source software licensing. Indeed, the publication noted that “she’s literally written the book on it:” Meeker is the author of “Open (Source) for Business: A Practical Guide to Open Source Software Licensing,” and the textbook “Technology Licensing: A Primer.”

“I couldn’t find a textbook I liked, so I wrote one,” said Meeker, who has taught at University of California, Berkeley School of Law and at Hastings College of the Law. The Daily Journal also highlighted Meeker’s recent success on behalf of Bruce Perens, founder of the free software movement, in a defamation lawsuit brought by Open Source Security Inc., as well as her work helping start-ups navigate open source licensing issues.

The Daily Journal highlighted Simmons’ background in physics and software development, praising her as “a trusted voice of reason for technology giants including Google LLC and Niantic Inc.,” maker of the augmented reality mobile game Pokémon Go.

“For Simmons, putting complex technology into context brings her career full-circle,” the publication observed, noting that Simmons studied physics with the idea of becoming a teacher. The managing partner of O’Melveny’s San Francisco office, Simmons told the Daily Journal: “I wanted to teach complicated concepts to people and I feel like that’s what I am doing now. I have the greatest job in the universe because I get to meet with some of the most brilliant engineers in the world, listen to them explain some of these incredible innovations, and teach it to judges and juries.”
