Firm Named California Litigation Department of the Year; Runner-Up in National Contest

NEW YORK—December 5, 2019—O’Melveny was named Litigation Department of the Year for California and recognized with a special commendation in the national competition at The American Lawyer Industry Awards in a gala ceremony here last night.

In honoring the firm with the award in highly competitive California, AmLaw observed that O’Melveny’s “California team had an impact across the country, as it helped beat an antitrust challenge to the AT&T-Time Warner merger; secured an early win in the Johnson & Johnson opioid litigation; and set a new standard in the U.S. Supreme Court on the statute of limitations for securities class actions.”

With scores of firms vying for the biennial distinction of being named AmLaw’s national Litigation Department of the Year, O’Melveny finished second and was singled out among the finalists for a special designation created during this year’s contest. AmLaw paid tribute to O’Melveny with the new, unique distinction of “Highly Commended,” praising the firm for being among a small handful of firms “at the core of industry-changing matters, leading the charge on their clients’ most important cases and operating at a level that sets them apart from their peers.”

“We are honored by this recognition and what it says about our firm,” said O’Melveny chair Bradley J. Butwin. “We have long believed that our dedication to our clients and communities is unique in our industry. We strive to represent the profession at its best and we’re proud to see our work being noticed in this way.”

O’Melveny is one of only two firms to have won, been named a finalist, or received honorable mention in every American Lawyer “Litigation Department of the Year” contest since the awards began in 2002.

“Awards like these remind us of the tremendous impact of the matters our litigation team so often handles,” said Richard B. Goetz, co-chair of O’Melveny’s Litigation Department. “They are also a testament to our unique culture, which attracts the best lawyers and offers them abundant opportunities to showcase their talents.”

Last night, O’Melveny was also one of four finalists for AmLaw’s Products Liability Department of the Year, and in June, the National Law Journal named the firm DC Litigation Department of the Year.

“I’m proud to work alongside such outstanding lawyers, who reflect so well not just on our firm and our values, but also what the profession stands for,” said Litigation Department co-chair M. Randall Oppenheimer. “As lawyers, we all have the potential to make an extraordinary difference.”
