O’Melveny Makes Top Five on American Lawyer’s 2021 Pro Bono Scorecard

NEW YORK—June 28, 2021—The American Lawyer has ranked O’Melveny fifth in the nation on its 2021 “Pro Bono Scorecard,” the publication’s annual survey of the legal industry’s top pro bono contributors. With this year’s scorecard, the firm jumped more than a dozen spots on the list.
O’Melveny’s high ranking is especially notable in a year that saw increased pro bono efforts across the industry. As AmLaw noted: “In 2020, as the pandemic, racial justice protests and a contentious election coincided, the legal industry’s largest firms poured themselves into pro bono, resulting in an uptick in hours worked and a seemingly endless list of meaningful matters handled.”
In “Justice Delivered: Highlights From Big Law’s Year of Impactful Pro Bono,” a special feature accompanying the scorecard, AmLaw hailed O’Melveny in particular for its US Supreme Court victory in Ramos v. Louisiana. Along with the Stanford Law School Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, the firm successfully argued that the US Constitution bars nonunanimous jury convictions—a legacy, the Court noted, of racist laws from the Jim Crow era.
