O’Melveny Welcomes Back Julia Schiller from the Department of Justice

February 22, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC—February 22, 2021—O’Melveny announced today that Julia Schiller, former Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General of the US Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division (DOJ or the Division), has rejoined the firm as a partner in the Antitrust & Competition Practice, based in Washington, DC. A seasoned antitrust lawyer, Schiller has extensive experience in merger reviews, antitrust litigation, and antitrust investigations, in both private practice and the federal government.

Schiller first joined O’Melveny as an associate in 2007, practicing for ten years in the firm’s Washington, DC office. For the past three and a half years, she has served as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General of the Division, where she provided oversight across a broad range of civil enforcement matters. In addition, Schiller played a leading role in advancing significant new or updated policies at the Division, including those relating to merger remedies, alternative dispute resolution, and the timing of the merger review process.

At O’Melveny, Schiller will guide clients’ transactions through the DOJ’s and the Federal Trade Commission’s merger review process. She also will represent clients before the agencies in investigations of suspected antitrust violations and advise clients on antitrust compliance, including obligations under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act, and design antitrust compliance programs.

“Julia is an esteemed alumna and we are delighted to welcome her home,” said O’Melveny chair Bradley J. Butwin. “O’Melveny has a long history of encouraging government service because we believe it is good for our firm and our clients. That is especially true in Julia’s case, and we know from experience that she embodies O’Melveny’s core values of excellence, leadership, and citizenship.”

“It’s a privilege to have Julia back on our team,” said Ian Simmons, Co-Chair of O’Melveny’s Antitrust & Competition Practice. “Julia brings deep experience in merger enforcement and a unique perspective on DOJ’s interests and priorities. Her time in the Front Office will prove invaluable to our clients. Julia’s great qualities are particularly timely and relevant as the country and its enforcers are likely to embark on a period of heightened antitrust discourse and scrutiny.”

“We are thrilled to have Julia back,” added Ben Bradshaw, Co-Chair of O’Melveny’s Antitrust & Competition practice. “As someone who has worked side-by-side with the DOJ staff in the most complex merger clearance, regulatory, and investigations work, Julia will bring our clients a rare level of experience to help guide their prospective transactions and compliance issues.”

Schiller’s return reflects O’Melveny’s focus on augmenting its Antitrust & Competition practice with lawyers with strong government experience, while also recruiting and promoting top practitioners around the world. In August 2019, O’Melveny welcomed Anna Pletcher, former Assistant Chief of the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, as a partner in its San Francisco office. Stephen McIntyre, a Los Angeles-based antitrust lawyer, was promoted to partner on January 1.
