Steve Olson Named to Daily Journal’s 2021 “Top White Collar Lawyers” List

LOS ANGELES—December 3, 2021—O’Melveny partner Steve Olson has been named to the Daily Journal’s 2021 “Top White Collar Lawyers” list, which recognizes the top 25 white collar lawyers practicing in California.
Olson serves as Co-Chair of O’Melveny’s White Collar Defense & Corporate Investigations Practice. In his award profile, the Daily Journal noted Olson’s dual role as interim general counsel for longtime client Hyundai Motors. He temporarily filled the position in 2021 after the company’s general counsel retired. “That was the standout experience for this year … I immediately recognized the opportunity to get to know an important client in a very important industry in a completely different way.”
The Daily Journal highlighted Olson’s leadership of Hyundai’s 40-person legal team from March to September, which included overseeing a meeting with the Biden Administration focused on electric vehicle infrastructure improvements. He also collaborated with outside trial counsel and handled labor and HR issues, product liability litigation, transactions, and white collar matters. “I got to learn that the general in general counsel is a good description because the work you do is so generalized,” Olson told the Daily Journal.
The publication also noted Olson’s simultaneous O’Melveny work throughout the year, which involved advising the governing boards of USC and UCLA in the wake of sexual abuse investigations, counseling mobile phone maker Honor and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD motors on regulatory compliance and litigation matters, and leading an accounting investigation for Mattel. “Of course, that amounted to two full-time jobs,” Olson said regarding splitting his time between O’Melveny and Hyundai. “One thing I learned this year is that having two jobs is about as challenging as it sounds.”
