O’Melveny Works to Protect Transgender Inmates

O’Melveny and three LGBTQ+ organizations filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit challenging California’s “Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act,” which protects transgender people incarcerated in the state.

The law requires California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to acknowledge an inmate’s self-reported gender identity. O’Melveny and the three organizations—Lambda Legal, the Transgender Law Center, and the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California—represent the Transgender Gender-Variant and Intersex Justice Project and four transgender women incarcerated in California.

“O’Melveny is proud to work with our co-counsel to protect the civil rights of incarcerated transgender individuals in a law that was enacted by the duly elected California Legislature and signed into law by Governor Newsom,” O’Melveny partner Dimitri Portnoi said.
