USJI: Playing the Long Game: Investment, Talent, and the US-Japan Baseball Market

June 9, 2026

O’Melveny partner Amy Siegel recently moderated the baseball panel for the US-Japan Initiative as the program celebrated its first anniversary. USJI aims to provide an important platform for substantive dialogue between two nations with a deep, evolving relationship and its latest program brings together leading voices across policy, industry, and culture to advance that dialogue.

This panel featured an in-depth conversation about baseball’s place on the global stage amid major sporting events such as the World Cup, NBA Finals, and Stanley Cup. Joining moderator Amy Siegel were Joan Garcia, Sports Manager for LA28, and Jason Ranne, President of Global Talent Representation at The Team, for a discussion on the globalization of leagues, talent, and ultimate fandom.

With LA28 presenting a historic opportunity for baseball in the near future, the panel highlighted how league structures, youth development, and infrastructure shape the sport’s growth and create opportunities on both sides of the Pacific. It also explored what the international field means for players from commercial, personal, and competitive perspectives.

Amy Siegel is Co-Head of O’Melveny's Entertainment, Sports and Media Industry Group, representing key stakeholders across the industry. She counsels clients throughout the sports ecosystem on the distribution of complex media and data rights and helps corporate sponsors and organizations leverage valuable intellectual property to grow audiences via sponsorships, endorsements, partnerships and fan engagement platforms.
