Law360 Names Baker, Fisher, Mitchell, Petrocelli, and Siegel 2020 MVPs
October 6, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK—October 6, 2020—Law360 has honored O’Melveny partners Charles “Chuck” Baker, Jeffrey Fisher, Nancy Mitchell, Dan Petrocelli, and Robert Siegel as 2020 MVPs in their respective practice areas: Sports & Betting, Appellate, Bankruptcy, Media & Entertainment, and Transportation.
The list represents an “elite slate of attorneys” who have “distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals.” This year’s MVPs were selected from a field of more than 900 applicants. The publication noted that O’Melveny was among the top firms in this year’s competition with five or more MVPs each.
Baker is co-chair of O’Melveny’s Sports Industry Group. His corporate practice encompasses mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and venture capital transactions, with a core focus in the sports, media and consumer sectors. Baker has represented buyers and sellers of sports franchises including David Tepper, founder and president of global hedge fund Appaloosa Management, in his acquisition of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and, more recently, in his winning bid for the latest Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team, which will be based in Charlotte, NC. Baker also recently served as lead counsel to businesswoman, activist and philanthropist Meg Whitman and her husband Dr. Griff Harsh in their acquisition of a significant stake in MLS’s FC Cincinnati.
Fisher, one of the nation’s leading Supreme Court practitioners and scholars, represents clients in high-stakes litigation involving a wide range of civil and criminal issues. He has argued over three dozen cases in the Court—including 12 in the previous four Terms. Over the past several years, Jeff was also found in a recent study to have the highest rate of obtaining grants of certiorari of any member of private bar. He was co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the historic marriage equality case Obergefell v. Hodges, in which the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees same-sex couples a right to marry.
Mitchell, who was also named an MVP last year, advises debtors, acquirers, and creditors on complex restructurings, workouts, and Chapter 11 proceedings, drawing on more than 30 years of experience as a lawyer and an investment banker. She has counseled clients on some of the largest and most complex bankruptcies and restructurings. In addition to leading the O'Melveny team representing Puerto Rico's public utilities in the largest in-court restructuring in US history, she helped California respond to the coronavirus, and aided the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom, in developing a legal and regulatory plan to address the PG&E bankruptcy and support the state's distressed electric utilities in the wake of deadly wildfires.
Petrocelli, a frequent presence on the MVPs list, is the chair of the firm’s Trial Practice Committee. He has a national trial practice representing clients in major litigation in a wide variety of areas, including sports, entertainment, intellectual property, unfair competition, business torts, securities, employment law, and criminal defense. His recent accomplishments include a ground-breaking win for Twentieth Century Fox against Netflix for unlawfully poaching employees under contract.
Recognized for the third year in a row and a multi-year honoree, Siegel is co-chair of O’Melveny’s Aviation Industry Group and represents major companies in federal court litigation under the Railway Labor Act and the National Labor Relations Act, arbitrations, labor negotiations, National Mediation Board and National Labor Relations Board matters, and employment law litigation and counseling. His clients include major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Atlas Air, Alaska Air, and more.
