O’Melveny Partners Apalla Chopra and Robert Siegel Named 2023 “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers” by the Daily Journal

LOS ANGELES—August 9, 2023—The Daily Journal has named O’Melveny partners Apalla Chopra and Robert Siegel to its 2023 list of “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers,” which recognizes the leading California lawyers who specialize in labor and employment.
Honored for the eighth year in a row, Chopra serves as co-chair of O’Melveny’s Litigation Department and chair of the firm’s Colleges and Universities Industry Group. She also formerly served as co-chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment Group. Among Chopra’s many achievements, the Daily Journal highlighted her role leading an internal investigation into workplace misconduct claims for the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers and conducting confidential investigations for major universities.
“They almost all involve sensitive subject matters that require a delicate hand in how the matter is presented to a court or to the public. Almost all of them include some type of reputational impact,” Chopra said.
Named to the list for a seventh time, Siegel was recognized for his many accomplishments within the past year, including representing major airlines in multiple labor disputes. Siegel represented United Airlines in a case brought by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), who claimed that the airline violated federal law by investigating misconduct claims against union officials. Showing that United does not have the option of ignoring allegations of retaliation, the US District Court for the District of Columbia agreed with Siegel and the O’Melveny team, finding no support for the union’s position.
“We took the position that even though they were union officials, they were also flight attendants … subject to company rules and procedures,” Siegel said. “That got a lot of attention just because not that many court decisions had directly addressed that kind of issue.”
