O’Melveny Welcomes Respected Houston Energy Litigator Meghan McElvy

May 27, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOUSTON—May 27, 2025—O’Melveny announced today that respected Texas trial lawyer Meghan McElvy has joined the firm’s Houston office as a partner in its General Litigation Practice Group and Energy Industry Group. Her addition further expands O’Melveny’s acclaimed roster of Texas litigators and bolsters the firm’s formidable energy sector capabilities.

McElvy brings more than 15 years of litigation experience representing energy clients in high-stakes cases in state and federal courts, as well as before domestic and international arbitral forums. She focuses her practice on legal and operational issues arising from the development of shale and drilling throughout Texas and across the US, including joint operating and joint development agreements, participation agreements, royalty obligations, surface use rights, mineral titles, mineral liens, oilfield services, gas gathering, processing facilities, and disputes involving oil and gas leases. She also advises midstream clients, as well as renewable energy and LNG companies, in a variety of consequential matters. Additionally, McElvy’s commercial litigation experience includes defending clients against multimillion-dollar personal injury claims involving energy infrastructure. And she has represented clients in contested regulatory proceedings before the Texas Public Utility Commission and Texas Railroad Commission.

Ranked among the nation’s leading oil and gas litigators by Chambers USA, McElvy currently serves as chair of the Houston Bar Association’s Energy Law Section. She comes to O’Melveny from the Houston office of Bradley, where she co-chaired that firm’s Energy Team, and before that from the Houston office of Baker Botts, where she practiced in energy litigation for over a decade. Before entering private practice, McElvy clerked for the Hon. Andrew S. Hanen of the US District Court for the Southern District of Texas, and she also worked as a distribution analyst for an oil refiner and marketer.

“We are delighted to welcome Meghan to our growing Houston office,” said O’Melveny chair Bradley J. Butwin. “She has a well-earned reputation as one of Houston’s preeminent energy lawyers, and she is a perfect addition to our talented team of Texas litigators. Her deep experience will be an immediate asset to our energy clients throughout the US and around the world. It is a pleasure to welcome her aboard.”

“Meghan’s sweeping experience in energy litigation qualifies her as an energy lawyer’s energy lawyer,” added O’Melveny partner Tim Durst, the firm’s Texas regional head for litigation. “Her depth of knowledge of the energy sector is remarkable, and her skills in the courtroom add extra punch to her prowess. Plus, Meghan’s integrity and passion for service—for her clients, the community, and the bar—make her a perfect fit for O’Melveny. We’re thrilled to welcome her to our Texas litigation team.”

“I’m genuinely excited by this opportunity to join O’Melveny as it continues to grow its Houston office,” said McElvy. “The firm is renowned as a trial powerhouse, with an expansive global platform and a track record of helping many of the world’s biggest energy companies resolve their most complex challenges. I’m delighted to join such a talented and dedicated team.”

McElvy’s arrival accelerates O’Melveny’s rapid expansion in the Lone Star State. She is the fourth lateral partner to join O’Melveny’s Houston office in less than a year—after partners Denise Scofield, David Aaronson, and Jibin Luke joined the firm in July and November 2024. And since 2021, O’Melveny has added nearly 80 lawyers—including 31 partners—across its offices in Houston, Dallas, and Austin.

McElvy earned her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and her B.B.A. magna cum laude from Southern Methodist University.
