The National Law Journal: 2021 Employment Law Trailblazers

July 22, 2021

The National Law Journal recognized O’Melveny partner Molly Lens as a 2021 Employment Law Trailblazer. While Lens’ litigation practice focuses on a range of issues, she made a particular impact in employment law in the past year, co-leading a team that secured a summary judgement and permanent injunction against Netflix on behalf of Twentieth Century Fox in a high-profile executive poaching case.

“In Hollywood, having a fixed term contract is a sign you made it, and only certain execs have earned that,” Lens said. “While California has certain employee pro-mobility policies, the code expressly permits fixed-term employment contracts. We were able to dispense with Netflix’s arguments that there were supposedly public policy reasons why Fox’s contracts were not binding.”

Lens’s profile highlighted the value of established client relationships founded on trust in such cases. She told The National Law Journal, “Employment matters are sensitive matters, so the role of a trusted counselor is critical. My employment work grew out of preexisting client relationships – it found me rather than me seeking it out.”
