Daily Journal Names Three O’Melveny Partners Among Top IP Lawyers of 2018

LOS ANGELES—May 15, 2018—The Daily Journal featured O’Melveny partners Darin Snyder, Brett Williamson, and Ryan Yagura in its special supplement spotlighting the top intellectual property lawyers of 2018 in California.

O’Melveny’s Northern California head of litigation, Snyder represents Alphabet Inc.-owned Google and other technology companies in a range of patent infringement cases, the Daily Journal noted. The publication also pointed to his work for leading an O’Melveny team that successfully defended Google in a patent infringement case involving Google Earth products, and the book he co-authored with O’Melveny partner David Almeling titled, “Trade Secret Law and Corporate Strategy.” Snyder told the Daily Journal: “One of the joys [of IP litigation] is getting an opportunity to work with smart and dedicated people on the cutting edge of various technologies and working with them to construct a story about their work and their progress that’s understandable to a jury.” In addition to handling major civil and criminal litigation matters involving intellectual property and technology-intensive business sectors, Snyder also currently serves as O’Melveny’s Diversity and Inclusion Partner and as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

“Williamson started out as a general commercial litigator but has spent the last two decades exclusively handling intellectual property cases,” the Daily Journal observed, citing his recent work as lead counsel for Endo International plc and its subsidiary, Par Pharmaceutical. “It’s been a really remarkable time to be an IP litigator... because there’s been so many changes,” Williamson, who is one of O’Melveny’s most seasoned IP litigators, told the publication. “In traditional corporate espionage, before electronic information, trade secrets cases were, in many ways, equivalent to a normal theft case because you were usually talking about physical documents or prototypes,” he said. In this digital, age, he added, “it’s very, very hard to know...exactly what’s been taken and what the vulnerabilities are.” With more than 25 years of experience, Williamson has handled patent and technology litigation in a wide range of industries, including everything from computer hardware and software to pharmaceuticals.

“As counsel to companies like Samsung and AMD Inc. in a number of recent patent battles, Yagura spends much of his time whittling down claims until the plaintiff has no solid case to make by the time the dispute goes to trial,” the Daily Journal wrote of Yagura, chair of O’Melveny’s Intellectual Property and Technology Practice. “There’s two ways to pursue it. You can either sit passively and let them pick the claims they like best, or you can aggressively go on the offensive and cause the case to get narrowed such that when it gets to trial it’s on a much more narrow set of issues,” Yagura, who has extensive experience leading offensive and defensive cases in District Court and ITC litigation, told the publication. “We have a ‘Let’s leave no stone unturned’ approach as we investigate these patents.”
