Friedman Named One of National Law Journal’s 2019 “Litigation Trailblazers”

NEW YORK—September 4, 2019—O’Melveny partner Peter Friedman has been named to The National Law Journal’s 2019 “Litigation Trailblazers” list, which honors litigators from a range of practice areas who are “truly agents of change.”

Friedman is a nationally acclaimed bankruptcy and restructuring litigator. He successfully represents troubled borrowers and public entities and their stakeholders in bankruptcy courts, district courts, and courts of appeals across the country. Over the past two years, he has litigated on behalf of the Governors of California and Puerto Rico in separate high profile restructuring matters.

The special NLJ supplement features a profile of Friedman, whose work, the publication observed, lies at the “intersection of public policy and litigation.”

“I’ve had two once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in the last 10 years,” Friedman told the NLJ, citing his work representing the US government in securing the approval of two of the largest loans in bankruptcy history and for Puerto Rico in litigation and restructuring matters before federal courts in cases authorized under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act.

As the NLJ noted, Friedman is also representing the government of California in the Pacific Gas & Electric bankruptcy.

Looking ahead, Friedman had a prediction for his field: “Where these issues come up with the intersection of public policy and financial restructuring, you will continue to see precedents being set and really important decisions impacting both financial and capital markets, as well as the futures of citizens who live in and use entities facing distress.”
