O’Melveny Honored with Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s “Compass Award”

October 17, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC—October 17, 2018—The Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) presented O’Melveny and firm Chair Bradley J. Butwin with its inaugural “Compass Award” for expanding opportunities for diverse attorneys.

The award was established to recognize LCLD members that show an exemplary commitment to the Council’s goal of creating a truly diverse U.S. legal profession. To qualify for this new honor, organizations must actively participate in the full suite of LCLD programs designed to attract, inspire, and nurture the diverse talent in their firms.

“As one of LCLD’s founding members, we are extremely honored to receive the Compass Award,” said Butwin, noting that O’Melveny’s then-chair, A. B. Culvahouse, helped launch the Council in 2009. “Its programs have been invaluable to our diverse attorneys. Participants return with new skills and new relationships that have enriched our entire firm.”

O’Melveny’s commitment to diversity and inclusion also extends to such efforts as adopting the Mansfield Rule, which is intended to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for these opportunities. This summer the firm achieved Mansfield “Certification Plus” for its diverse hiring and promotion practices.

In July, O’Melveny ranked among the top 10 firms on The American Lawyer’s prestigious A-List, which takes a holistic view of law firms by considering a range of factors, including pro bono, racial diversity, percentage of female equity partners, and associate satisfaction scores (the seventh consecutive year that the firm was included on the A-List). In June, O’Melveny topped Vault’s “Best Law Firms to Work For” rankings and was honored for having the “Best Summer Associate Program.” O’Melveny was also named one of the “Best Law Firms for Women” for the sixth consecutive year by Working Mother magazine for employing best policies and practices to retain and promote women lawyers.
