O’Melveny Named One of 2022’s Insurance Groups of the Year by Law360

NEW YORK—February 2, 2023—O’Melveny’s Insurance Practice has been named a 2022 “Practice Group of the Year” by Law360 in its annual awards competition.
The winning practice groups were selected from nearly 900 submissions by law firms across the country. The special report honors the “attorneys who had the biggest wins and made the most significant contributions to their practice groups in the past year.”
Law360 highlighted O’Melveny’s representation of Century Indemnity in the Boy Scouts of America’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan, which was approved after a five-week confirmation trial in September 2022 and addressed more than 80,000 sexual abuse claims.
"This was the most difficult case I've ever dealt with. Just coming into it, it was a house on fire. We had the emotions of the folks involved at a boiling-over point," said Tancred Schiavoni, co-chair of the firm’s Insurance Practice. "It was as hot a matter as I've ever dealt with."
Law360 also noted O’Melveny’s win for Chubb in a landmark case at the Delaware Supreme Court, with the court ruling that the company had no obligation to defend Rite Aid against opioid-related lawsuits brought by Ohio counties.
"It's just an incredibly important precedent for these cases going forward," said Allen Burton, co-chair of O’Melveny’s Insurance Practice.
Law360 also recognized O’Melveny’s role in another win for Chubb, in August, when a New York federal jury denied Madelaine Chocolate Novelty’s multi-million-dollar bid seeking insurance coverage from a Chubb unit for damage to its factories caused by Hurricane Sandy.
"With these massive economic, high-profile issues facing our country — Hurricane Sandy, the sexual abuse scandal with the Boy Scouts and the opioids epidemic — our practice is at the forefront," Burton said.
