O’Melveny Partners Chopra, Siegel, and Karr Named 2022 “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers” by the Daily Journal

LOS ANGELES—June 30, 2022—The Daily Journal has named O’Melveny partners Apalla Chopra, Robert Siegel, and Adam Karr to its 2022 list of “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers,” which recognizes the top California lawyers who specialize in labor and employment.
Chopra serves as co-chair of O’Melveny’s Litigation Department, co-chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment Group, and chair of the firm’s Colleges and Universities Industry Group. Among Chopra’s many achievements, the Daily Journal highlighted her role in an internal investigation into misconduct claims made against the women’s basketball coaching staff at Syracuse University. “Some of the most compelling work I continue to do involves systemic issues employers face–ranging from litigating about the legality of an employer’s business model to conducting neutral investigations which reveal issues that require change and improvement,” Chopra said.
The Daily Journal lauded Siegel for advising Spirit and Frontier airlines on labor issues in relation to their US$6.6 billion merger agreement, which included combining the airlines’ unions and collective bargaining agreements. “There is a fairly complicated Railway Labor Act procedure for that,” Siegel explained. The publication also noted Siegel’s role in a “hard-fought litigation victory” for cargo carriers Atlas Air and Southern Air that required a specialized interest arbitration. “It was a fairly significant case for us,” Siegel said.
Karr was recognized for his representation of Century 21 Real Estate LLC in a statewide action brought by real estate agents alleging the misclassification of their roles as independent contractors rather than employees under California law. “The issue in the case is whether or not real estate agents are properly classified as independent contractors in the state of California. It’s a very cutting edge and important issue,” Karr said.
