O’Melveny Recognized by Leadership Council on Legal Diversity with the Compass Award

October 12, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK—October 12, 2022—For the fifth consecutive year, O’Melveny and firm chair Bradley J. Butwin have both received the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s “Compass Award” for expanding opportunities for underrepresented attorneys.

The LCLD established the Compass Award to recognize exemplary commitment to the Council’s goal of creating a truly diverse US legal profession. To qualify for the honor, firms must actively participate in the full range of LCLD programs designed to attract, inspire, and nurture underrepresented talent. The Compass Award recognizes those who (among other things) participate in the Fellows and Pathfinder Programs, and the Pipeline Program, and those who attend the Annual Membership Meeting, the Leadership Summit, and/or submit a Leader’s Pledge.

O’Melveny chair Bradley J. Butwin submitted such a pledge, vowing to devote himself to implementing and fostering O’Melveny’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) program, a pillar of the firm’s strategic plan. He meets regularly with the women and attorneys of color on his Management Team and Executive Committee, and others, to gain insight into how they are faring, how well the firm’s leadership structure is fulfilling O’Melveny’s DE&I objectives, and how the firm can do better. Butwin further committed to hold the firm’s leaders and partners accountable for O’Melveny’s DE&I success and to continue to direct a review of structural bias in key programs and processes. He also recently launched a Leadership Mentoring Program designed to support the experience and retention of the firm’s racial and ethnic minority, LGBTQ+, and first-generation midlevel associates. Butwin will continue working to ensure that all members of the O’Melveny family feel welcome and have an equal opportunity to thrive.

A founding member of the LCLD, O’Melveny has demonstrated its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through a variety of efforts, including the Mansfield Rule, which is intended to boost representation of underrepresented lawyers in a firm’s leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for executive positions. For four consecutive years, O’Melveny has achieved Mansfield “Certification Plus” status for its outstanding hiring and promotion practices. The firm has also achieved Gold Standard Certification by the Women in Law Empowerment Forum (WILEF) for six consecutive years, reflecting an ongoing commitment to women in leadership and advancing women lawyers.
