O’Melveny’s Gabriel Olivera Named a 2021 NCBJ Blackshear Presidential Fellow

NEW YORK—August 19, 2021—O’Melveny counsel Gabriel L. Olivera has been selected by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) as a Blackshear Presidential Fellow for 2021.
Named after the esteemed retired Bankruptcy Judge Cornelius Blackshear, the Presidential Blackshear Fellowship is awarded to diverse bankruptcy attorneys who “deserve special recognition for their professional accomplishments to date” and “show the potential to distinguish themselves in future years as highly respected members of the bankruptcy or debt restructuring bar.” Fellows are invited to participate in the annual meeting of the NCBJ, an association comprised of US Bankruptcy Judges who come together to foster education, cooperation, and quality within the bankruptcy bar and system.
Nominees must meet specific criteria to warrant this recognition, including having demonstrated “legal excellence in the practice of bankruptcy law,” “a serious commitment to principles of civility, ethics and professionalism,” and “a commitment to the continued educational development of bankruptcy professionals and to professional activities that will benefit the public, members of the bar and the court system.”

Based in O’Melveny’s New York office, Olivera has extensive experience in financial reorganization and corporate bankruptcy-related litigation. A native of Puerto Rico, he is a member of the firm’s team representing the Government of Puerto Rico in its Title III proceedings. Prior to entering private practice, Olivera was a law clerk for the Hon. Brian K. Tester, formerly of the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
