Petrocelli and Godesky Named to Billboard’s “2020 Top Music Lawyers”

NEW YORK—July 28, 2020—O’Melveny partners Dan Petrocelli and Leah Godesky have been named to Billboard magazine’s list of its “2020 Top Music Lawyers.” The list recognizes lawyers in the music industry who in a “time of unprecedented economic and social upheaval…have kept business on course, helped clients cope with the pandemic—and vigorously joined the call for racial justice.”
Billboard highlighted Petrocelli’s representation of Global Music Rights in its antitrust suit against the Radio Music License Committee, which represents 10,000 radio stations. Petrocelli explained that the litigation seeks “to enforce the rights of songwriters to fair compensation when their music is played on AM/FM radio. As the pandemic has crippled other income streams, songwriters are even more dependent on performance royalties.”
In recognizing Godesky, Billboard hailed her efforts to defend pop star Kesha in a suit brought against the singer by Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald for defamation and breach of contract. The past year included “a fight through the summary judgment stage” of the case, Godesky said.
Chair of the Firm’s Trial Practice Committee, Petrocelli has a national trial practice representing clients in major litigation in a wide variety of areas, including sports, entertainment, intellectual property, unfair competition, business torts, securities, employment law, and criminal defense. The American Lawyer has named him among the top litigators in the nation.
Godesky, who was also named to Billboard’s 2019 list, is a trial lawyer who represents clients across an array of industries, including insurance, entertainment, securities, and pharmaceuticals. Her litigation experience spans a variety of forums, including federal and state-court proceedings, arbitrations, and regulatory investigations.
