Petrocelli Named to Daily Journal “Top 100”

CENTURY CITY—September 18, 2019—O’Melveny partner Daniel Petrocelli has been named to the Daily Journal’s “Top 100 2019.” The annual list recognizes “California lawyers doing cutting-edge legal work.”

In its profile of Petrocelli, Daily Journal highlighted two recent major wins, including his defeat of the US Department of Justice’s attempt to block AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, which was called the “Antitrust Trial of the Century.” Petrocelli told the Daily Journal that while it was not his first antitrust trial, it was his first merger trial. “I took the same tried-and-true approach I’ve used for some 40 years: Follow the evidence and present your case based on the facts and the law,” he said.

The profile also detailed Petrocelli’s efforts representing Twentieth-Century Fox in a breach of contract dispute with actors from the hit TV series “Bones.” In that case, Petrocelli persuaded an LA County Superior Court in May to reduce a US$128 million punitive damages award, arguing the arbitrator exceeded his authority because the contracts at issue waived a right to punitive damages. “It is imperative for arbitrators to scrupulously abide by the parties’ arbitration agreement, particularly as to limits on arbitral authority,” Petrocelli said.

Named one of the top lawyers in the nation by The American Lawyer and a “Power Lawyer” by The Hollywood Reporter, Petrocelli is the chair of O’Melveny’s Trial Practice Committee.
