Deadline: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Copyright Lawsuit Should Be Grounded, Paramount Says

Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay, the widow and son of the author of a 1983 article that inspired the original “Top Gun’ movie, have filed a copyright lawsuit against Paramount. The two claim that “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to the original film that was released this year, “runs contrary to the termination rights that they claim they hold over the property.” Daniel Petrocelli and Molly N. Lens of O’Melveny & Myers LLP, who represent Paramount, stated in an August 26th filing that, “To the contrary, any similarity between these vastly different works derives from the fact that Top Gun is an actual naval training facility.”
