FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK—October 16, 2020—Eight O’Melveny partners have been named LMG Life Sciences 2020 “Stars,” recognized by the publication as preeminent life sciences practitioners in the US. LMG Life Sciences is a leading guide to top North American law firms and lawyers specializing in the life sciences industry.

O’Melveny’s Life Sciences Stars include:

  • Steve Brody, Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement
  • Maggie Carter, Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement
  • Richard Goetz, Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement
  • John Kappos, Intellectual Property
  • Lisa Pensabene, Intellectual Property
  • Daniel Petrocelli, Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement
  • Hassen Sayeed, Intellectual Property
  • Scott Voelz, Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement

In addition, O’Melveny was ranked as a recommended firm in the category of Hatch-Waxman Patent Litigation (Branded). In its analysis of the firm’s Intellectual Property practice, LMG noted the firm’s work for a number of major entities, including AstraZeneca, Amgen subsidiary Onyx Therapeutics, and ViiV Healthcare.

LMG named Lisa Pensabene, chair of O’Melveny’s Life Sciences Patent Litigation Practice, its 2020 Branded Hatch-Waxman Litigator of the Year for a “significant year of trial work and repeated market praise.” The guide also highlighted partner John Kappos’s litigation skills, noting he represented Agilent Technologies in a trade secrets suit brought against a competitor. And it added partner Hassen Sayeed, noting that “his technical credentials are bolstered by a medical degree.”

In its analysis of the firm’s non-IP litigation and enforcement work, LMG praised O’Melveny’s work in the life sciences area, particularly in the product liability and class actions area, “demonstrated by a year of notable trial work for top pharmaceutical and device manufacturers.” The guide singled out Product Liability and Mass Torts Practice Chair Steve Brody, who was named a finalist for LMG’s Non-IP Trial Lawyer of the Year honor for 2020, for such achievements as representing Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals in the first opioid products case in the United States to go to trial.

As LMG noted, “leading trial lawyers Daniel Petrocelli and Richard Goetz act alongside Brody and the O’Melveny team further assisting Johnson & Johnson in opioid matters, including a multidistrict litigation in Ohio and others cases throughout the country.”

O’Melveny’s life sciences team understands the challenges faced by pharmaceutical, medical device, and diagnostics companies, both large and small. The firm’s ranks include former scientists with advanced degrees in chemistry and biology, former life-science industry regulators with the “insider perspective” to deftly steer clients through related governmental inquiries, and boardroom-level counselors with strong ties to the entrepreneurs, scientists, and venture capital firms that drive innovation in the life sciences sector.
